Why bother

The day you need it is a bad day to find it dead. This is an essentials-tier job. Skip it and you're inviting the expensive kind of problem, or the dangerous kind.

What the job involves

  1. Pour a 5-gallon bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float rises. The pump should kick on, drain the pit fast, then shut itself off when the water drops. That whole cycle is the test.
  2. Watch and listen while it runs. The float should swing free, not snag on the basin wall, the motor should run smooth with no grinding or rattle, and the pit should actually empty.
  3. Step outside and find where the discharge pipe lets out. Water should be pushing through it and running well clear of the foundation, not backing up against ice, leaves, or muck.
  4. Scoop the grit out of the pit and clear the inlet screen. If you've got a backup battery, confirm it still holds a charge before you walk away.
