Why bother

The thing that cuts a shock near water. Standard upkeep. Dull and cheap, and a lot less dull than whatever it's quietly preventing.

What the job involves

  1. Plug a lamp or nightlight into the outlet and make sure it lights up. Press RESET first if it doesn't.
  2. Press the TEST button. The power should cut out at once and the lamp should go dark. If it stays lit, the protection's gone.
  3. Press RESET. The lamp should come back on. If it won't reset, the unit has failed.
  4. A GFCI that fails either test is done. Swap it yourself if you're comfortable, or have an electrician do it. Either way it stops being a real GFCI until it's replaced.

Do it yourself, or pay someone?

The test is yours: press TEST and RESET, takes seconds, no tools. Swapping a dead one is a moderate job (kill the breaker, match the LINE and LOAD wiring); an electrician charges about $130 to $300 to do it, mostly labor, and old or awkward wiring is worth handing over.

What skipping it costs

$130 to $300 is what an electrician charges to replace one dead GFCI, $210 on average, or roughly $7 to $25 for the part if you fit it yourself. That's the only honest dollar figure here, and it's the small end of it. A GFCI can fail "live": it keeps handing out power but stops tripping on a ground fault, so it gives no shock protection at all while looking perfectly fine. The monthly TEST button is the only way to catch that. GFCIs cut U.S. home electrocutions roughly in half, and the CPSC reckons proper GFCI protection could prevent about two-thirds of the 300-odd electrocutions still happening in and around the home each year. There's no tidy price on that, which is rather the point.

Signs it's overdue

  • You press TEST and the outlet keeps the power on. It still works as a plain socket, but the shock protection is gone.
  • It won't reset, trips over and over for no reason, or feels warm, buzzes, or shows scorch marks.
  • It's never been tested and it's more than about 10 years old. GFCIs wear out, and the older ones don't check themselves.

How often should I test a GFCI outlet?

Once a month, plus after it's installed and after a power outage. That's what the CPSC, the ESFI, and the manufacturers all say. Newer self-testing units (required since 2015) keep an eye on themselves, but the monthly press is still the habit worth keeping. It takes seconds.

If a GFCI still gives power, isn't it fine?

No. A GFCI can fail in a way where it still supplies power but no longer trips on a ground fault, so it gives no shock protection while looking like it works. The TEST button is the only reliable way to tell whether the protection is still there.
