How often should you flip and rotate your mattress?

Grumpty

Grumpty's answer

Every 6 months

Why bother

Left put, the hip and shoulder zones sag early. A thorough-tier job. Skippable when life's busy, worth it when it isn't.

Why it's a range

Older innerspring beds want it quarterly. Foam and latex hold up to a year. Some zoned beds shouldn't turn at all.

What the job involves

  1. Check the owner's manual or the law tag first. Most modern mattresses are one-sided: rotate only, never flip. Flip only if it's a true two-sided bed and the maker says to.
  2. Strip the bedding and slide the mattress clear of the headboard so there's room to turn it.
  3. Rotate it 180 degrees head-to-foot, so the foot end sits where your head was. That spreads the wear off the spots you sleep in. (Two-sided bed: flip it over instead.)
  4. Set it back square on the foundation, remake the bed, and note the date. Same again in about six months.

Do it yourself, or pay someone?

Yourself. Free, five minutes, no tools. A heavy king or queen goes easier with a second pair of hands, but there's nothing here to hire out.

What skipping it costs

$850 to $1,650 buys the queen mattress you'd otherwise have kept a few more years: roughly $850 for innerspring, $1,500 for foam or latex, $1,650 for a hybrid, plus $20 to $150 to haul the old one off. Sleeping the same spots night after night sags it early at the hips and shoulders. Worse, many warranties list rotation as required care, so a premature dip that should have meant a free replacement gets the claim denied, and the whole bill lands on you. Turning it costs five minutes and a date scribbled down.

Signs it's overdue

  • A visible dip or body-shaped valley where you sleep that doesn't bounce back once you're up.
  • Waking with new lower-back, hip, or shoulder stiffness that eases off within half an hour of getting up.
  • You can't remember the last time you turned it, or one side plainly feels more worn than the other.

When to start thinking about it

A few days' warning does it. Grumpty grumbles 3 days out, then leaves you alone. Mark it done and Grumpty sets the next one, every 6 months, so you can go back to forgetting it exists.

Questions people ask

How often should I rotate my mattress?

Every six months suits most beds. Memory foam, latex, and newer innerspring want it once or twice a year; older innerspring beds do better at two to five times a year. Check the manual, mind, since a few zoned-support mattresses are built not to be rotated at all.

Should I flip my mattress or just rotate it?

Just rotate, near enough always. Most modern mattresses are one-sided, with a firm core under the comfort layers, so flipping puts the hard side up and wrecks the feel. Flip only if it's a genuine two-sided bed or the maker specifically tells you to.

Can skipping rotation really void my warranty?

It can. Plenty of warranties name proper care, rotation or flipping per the manual, as a condition of cover, and sagging from poor care is excluded. Most only cover a sag of three-quarters of an inch to an inch and a half anyway, so a dip blamed on neglect can leave you paying for the new one yourself.
