Why bother
Scale clogs the element and flecks every brew. A thorough-tier job. Skippable when life's busy, worth it when it isn't.
Why it's a range
Hard water wants it nearer monthly. Soft water can leave it half a year.
What the job involves
- Unplug it, let it cool, and tip out whatever water's been sitting in there. Give the inside a cold rinse so you start with bare scale, not yesterday's brew.
- Fill it halfway with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and cold water, bring it to a boil, then switch off and leave it to sit for half an hour to an hour. The vinegar does the work while you do something else.
- Pour the lot out, rinse the inside with cold water, and wipe off any crust that's still clinging on with a damp cloth.
- Boil a full kettle of plain water and chuck it, once or twice, to clear the vinegar smell before your next cup tastes like a chip shop.
Do it yourself, or pay someone?
Yourself, every time. It's a five-minute kitchen job with white vinegar and water, and nobody hires it out. If scale ever does kill the kettle you bin it and buy another for $20 to $65, since there's nothing inside a sealed one to repair.
Signs it's overdue
- A chalky white crust or rough film coating the inside walls and the base plate where the water heats.
- White flakes or gritty bits floating in your tea, or settled at the bottom of the cup.
- It boils louder or slower than it used to, or the water comes out tasting flat or a bit metallic.
When to start thinking about it
A few days' warning does it. Grumpty grumbles 3 days out, then leaves you alone. Mark it done and Grumpty sets the next one, every 3 months, so you can go back to forgetting it exists.

How often should I actually descale it?
About once a month, more if your water's hard, every two or three months if the kettle mostly sits idle. Bob Vila puts it roughly there. Hard-water guidance runs from every two to four weeks in the worst areas down to every three months where the water's soft. Run a finger round the inside; the scale tells you when.
Will descaling really lower my energy bill?
Barely, if at all. When someone actually timed a scaled kettle before and after, the boil changed by about a second, 105 down to 103.7 on a small fill, worth under roughly $4 a year. Do it for the taste and to keep flakes out of your cup, not to save money.
Is it safe to drink water boiled in a furred-up kettle?
Yes. Limescale is just calcium and magnesium carbonate, the same harmless minerals already in hard tap water, so it's no health risk, only unpleasant. The reasons to clear it are taste, the floating flakes, and keeping the kettle going, not safety.
